Understanding Time & a Half Premium Math
When employers process time-and-a-half payroll, accounting systems split compensation into two distinct ledgers: straight-time regular pay and overtime premium pay. Under federal labor standards, the 'half' represents the premium reward for working long hours.
Base Hourly Rate (1.0×)
Your standard straight-time compensation paid for all regular scheduled work hours up to 40 per week.
The Half Premium (+0.5×)
The statutory bonus paid strictly on overtime hours. At $30/hr base pay, this premium is $15/hr.
Combined Rate (1.5×)
Total gross hourly overtime wage ($45/hr in our example), subject to standard federal & FICA taxes.
